Have you ever heard the theory that even if you have a bunch of things (like, for example, jewelry), as long as you arrange them into a tray or several trays, they look more organized? I mean, think about it… if you just have a bunch of jewelry laying around, it doesn’t exactly look nice. It just looks like a big mess! Now imagine corralling them all into trays, and imagine those trays are actually pretty, too! Let me give you a peek at what this might look like:
Suddenly your jewelry is looking better and you’re feeling happier. Welcome to today’s DIY!
All You Need Is Some Tape!
You’ve seen this material once before. It’s not paint – it’s electrical tape. The almighty electrical tape is back. Remember the striped storage box? Well now it has smaller black and white friends! Let’s look at what you need to make these.
Pretty straightforward, right? The white trays were found at a thrift store, but you might find that you already own some. If thrifting isn’t your thing, hit up IKEA for some great white dishes! Think kitchen aisles, because small plates and bowls are great for projects like this.
The only thing you need to do for this project is cut triangles from the tape and place them onto your trays in a pattern. Mix and match, create your own and always feel free to get creative!
I totally encourage you to get your creative juices flowing and create unique patterns. Triangles are great to play with, and the electrical tape can be really easily removed and replaced as you go, though you might not want to re-stick it more than 5 times per piece, just so it doesn’t completely lose its stickiness!
Snazzy and Uber-Easy
It doesn’t have to be perfect, remember that. Is it terrible that I almost didn’t want to put jewelry in these? They look kind of awesome on their own, don’t you think? Like little pieces of art! I have to say, though, as far as jewelry trays go, these are my faves!
I love that the colors and shapes of the jewelry pop against the black and white, and the trays themselves don’t take away from the pretty sparkly things on them!
You may also recognize the painting in the background because that was a past DIY here on Decoist, too! I love love love how the gold shimmers and that the pink and blue get picked up in the jewels as well as in other small accesspries. Mixing warm and cool colors is pretty awesome when you want to create a fun atmosphere!
Play with Patterns
Another awesome thing about these trays is that if you happen to remove the jewelry pieces, the trays can stand alone without looking empty – remember how I didn’t want to put anything in them in the first place? Well, turns out you don’t really have to!
You could definitely experiment with other types of tape for this project, but I love the electrical tape because it sticks really well, can be easily removed, and it’s so solid that it looks like paint! It’s kind of the perfect DIY material, don’t you think?
Check out the whole set-up. I really can’t say enough about how much I’m loving the graphic element this brings to my vanity, and how well it worked with the painting!
Have you ever tried a DIY like this? Would you? I dare you to cut out some shapes from electrical tape and stick them to some white trays, and I dare you not to love it! Now go on and give it a try!
