Remodeling projects require both proper planning and the right approach. While renovations can often seem simple, they tend to take up a lot of time, effort and resources. Nestled in California, the Moraga Residence was a dark ranch house that needed a modern makeover. The task of turning this closed space into a bright, beautiful and contemporary space fell to Jennifer Weiss Architecture. Adding a new entryway, wider and taller doors, large floor-to-ceiling glass windows and an open living plan, designers accomplished this task with elegance and style.
One of the important factors in the remodeling was the tight budget constraint. This meant the designers had to do as much as they can by altering as little as possible. While the existing kitchen was tripled in its size to create a warm and spacious family area, a new laundry, home office and powder room were created in the remainder of the space. The living area exudes a light and airy appeal thanks to that giant folding glass doors that let in ample natural ventilation.
Another striking feature of the home is the use of iconic furnishings which lend it a great character. Right off the bat one can spot the Saarinen Womb Chair and Ottoman, the Oval Tulip Coffee Table, George Nelson Spindle Clock and the Supernova pendant. We simply love the use of the mid-century modern classics and their inimitable aura instantly lifts the interiors. The Bertoia Bar Stools next to the kitchen island also stand out visually.
