Although it can seem simple enough, adding color to a plain room isn’t always easy – especially if painting is out of the question. If you live in a rented space where painting isn’t allowed, or simply don’t want to go through the hassle, bright area rugs can offer a welcome reprieve from those too-neutral design schemes. In addition to being available in a wide range of patterns and sizes, they’re also one of the easiest elements to add – simply roll out and enjoy. However, as you choose your new rug there are a few rules to keep in mind.
Firstly, remember that the way an area rug looks depends greatly on your floor type. Area rugs look best on hardwood, laminate, tile, bamboo, marble, sealed concrete and other such surfaces. However, they may not mesh as well with some types of carpet. If you plan to lay a rug on top of your carpet, opt for a thicker weave.
Color is necessary and, without it a home can look lifeless. Vibrant patterns and colors can strengthen the look of almost any room, so long as they don’t clash with any pre-existing elements. For example, you wouldn’t want to place a rug with a rich blue, gold and red Persian design in a room alongside a patterned sofa. However, this classic design is extremely attractive when paired with neutral furniture and simple wall art. Also, don’t be shy of monochromatic colors as these can make quite a statement in their simplicity.
You should also consider the size of the rug in proportion to the room. Larger rugs can make a bigger statement, but you don’t want a rug to overwhelm your floor space. A good rule of thumb is to choose rugs that are about two feet shorter than the smallest wall in the room. Additionally, when laying a rug in your hallway, leave about two and a half to three feet in front of the door clear.
Lastly, remember that area rugs are an investment and, just like any other item you buy for your home, you want to make sure it’s built to last. A factory made rug is obviously going to cost less than a hand woven carpet, but it also has less value and may wear out sooner. Make a selection you will be happy with for years to come.
