As closely-knit and as warm as an ideal family – this description nearly answers this 3,000 square foot single-family residence in southern Orange County, California. Completed in 2008, this house, Davidson Residence, is located in Laguna Beach, a seaside resort city and artist community. Davidson Residence by McClean Design has been built in answer to the client’s desire for a house that would relate to its garden and would radiate a contemporary feeling. The frontage is curved and done in dark metal panels. This contrasts with the horizontal lines of the rest of the house and highlights the planting in the front yard.
Black metal panels, stainless steel, aluminum, glass, and stone are used as building materials. The living space boasts a 30-foot-high retractable glass wall that opens the kitchen and living room to the garden, thus expanding the space. Sleek, stylish furnishings match the minimal color palette of black, grey, silver, and white. The upper level is earmarked for the client’s two daughters, encompassing their bedrooms and a family room.
